Temporal Resolution

Definition
Temporal resolution describes the visual system's capacity to resolve events that are closely spaced in time as distinct rather than merged. It is most commonly indexed by the critical flicker fusion threshold or by two-flash fusion tasks, in which two brief flashes presented in rapid succession are judged as one or two events depending on the gap between them. Landis (1954) reviewed decades of flicker-fusion research and established the wide individual variability in temporal resolution, variability that later work linked to differences in the speed of underlying visual processing rather than to attention or motivation alone. Higher temporal resolution allows more visual information to be extracted per unit time, which matters most when stimuli are brief or rapidly changing.

In gaming
- Distinguishing two closely timed hit-marker flashes during a rapid multi-shot exchange rather than perceiving them as one combined flash.

Relevance
NeuroRank does not run a dedicated flicker-fusion or two-flash task, but the Flicker module's brief, low-salience onsets and the Aim module's fast-appearing targets both implicitly demand strong temporal resolution to detect and localize correctly within a short exposure window.
