Task Switching

Definition
Task switching research measures the price paid at the moment of transition between two different tasks, known as switch cost: reaction time and error rate both rise on the first trial after a rule change, compared to a trial that repeats the same rule. Monsell's (2003) review established that part of this cost is reducible through advance preparation, but a portion is residual, it persists even when the performer has unlimited time to prepare for the upcoming switch, which implies a genuine reconfiguration process in the cognitive system rather than simple carelessness or surprise.

Relevance
NeuroRank does not run a formal alternating-rule task-switching paradigm across its six modules today, each module tests one skill in relative isolation rather than forcing rapid alternation between rule sets within a single trial block. The Consistency dimension, which scores variance in performance across a session's trials, is the closest indirect signal available: a player who maintains stable output as module demands change session to session is, at minimum, not showing the kind of context-transition breakdown task-switching research describes.
