Deliberate Practice

Definition
Deliberate practice is a specific, effortful form of training, not just accumulated hours of doing an activity. Ericsson, Krampe, and Tesch-Romer's (1993) study of expert performers defined it as practice that targets a specific, identified weakness, is performed with full concentration, includes a clear performance goal, and is immediately followed by informative feedback that the learner uses to adjust the next attempt. Their research on musicians was later summarized, and often oversimplified, into pop-science claims about a fixed number of hours to expertise, but the original finding was narrower and more useful: unstructured repetition, like casually playing an instrument or a game for fun, produces far slower improvement than the same number of hours spent deliberately targeting a known weakness with feedback.
