Aim Precision

Definition
Aim precision describes the spatial accuracy of a targeting response, independent of the time taken to produce it, and is typically indexed by the distance between the response location and the true target center across many trials. MacKenzie (1992) extended Fitts's Law into a practical research and design tool for pointing tasks, formalizing throughput as a joint function of movement time and the endpoint scatter around the target, making clear that speed and precision are two separable components of the same targeting movement rather than one combined score. A player can move quickly to the correct general area and still miss precisely, or move more slowly and land with tight endpoint accuracy.

In gaming
- Landing a headshot rather than a body shot on an otherwise correctly timed and correctly directed flick in an FPS duel.
- Placing a skillshot's exact center on a moving target in a MOBA, where the difference between a clip and a miss is a matter of pixels, not timing.
- Consistently hitting the same relative point on a hitbox across repeated engagements, a marker of low endpoint variance rather than raw speed.
Relevance
NeuroRank's Aim module records distFromCenter on every trial alongside response time, explicitly separating precision from speed. The Aim Precision dimension score is built primarily from this distance metric, isolating targeting accuracy from the Reaction Speed dimension's RT-based measure.
