What MOBA Working Memory Actually Tests
NeuroRank measures working memory with a spatial grid recall task, a 3×3 grid shows a sequence of cells in order, the grid clears, and the player has to reproduce the sequence by clicking the correct cells in the correct order. Sequence length climbs from 3 cells to 6 across the module, increasing load trial by trial.
In a MOBA context this maps directly to holding multiple entities and their state in mind at once, enemy positions from vision, cooldown timers, objective spawn windows, while continuing to make decisions. A cell recalled out of order counts as incorrect, the same way a wrong assumption about an enemy's cooldown state produces a wrong decision even if the position was tracked correctly.
Benchmarks From the Live Cohort
Grid recall accuracy norms below, read fresh from NeuroRank's current normative tables. This metric is ceiling-capped at the 91st percentile for this population, the task is easy enough for the strongest players that a meaningful share reach perfect recall, so no 99th or 95th percentile row exists above that cap.
| Percentile | Recall Rate |
|---|---|
| 91st (cap) | 100% |
| 80th | ≥97.8% |
| 70th | ≥93.3% |
| 60th | ≥93.1% |
| 50th | ≥88.9% |
| 30th | ≥77.8% |
| 10th | ≥66.7% |

The steepest drop sits in the bottom half of the distribution, from 88.9% at the median down to 66.7% at the 10th percentile, a 22-point spread. Players struggling in the lower half are not failing to notice information on the map, they are failing to hold it once noticed.
Why It Matters More in MOBA Than Other Genres
Working memory is measured the same way across every NeuroRank genre, but its load is highest in MOBA titles because of the sheer number of tracked entities. A MOBA player receives information about five enemy champions, several objectives, and their own cooldown kit simultaneously, every few seconds, for the length of a 25 to 45 minute match.
Missing-champion tracking is the clearest in-game expression of this dimension, the moment two enemy champions go untracked on the map is the moment a gank becomes invisible until it lands. Objective timers add a second, slower-moving memory load on top of the fast-moving positional one.
Working memory interacts with decision quality directly, a player holding accurate information about the game state can still choose the wrong response to it, which is why the two are measured as separate dimensions rather than assumed to move together.
Training MOBA Working Memory
Working memory is one of the more trainable cognitive dimensions when the right methods are used. Generic brain-training apps that test arbitrary patterns show limited transfer to in-game performance, spatial and sequential tasks that mirror the map transfer better.
A minimap glance-and-name drill, checking the minimap every few seconds during practice games and explicitly naming the last-seen position of every enemy champion, builds the habit of actively encoding positional information rather than passively glancing past it. Spatial chunking, grouping enemy positions into a rough formation rather than five separate points, is how strong players hold more entities than their raw capacity would otherwise allow.
Measuring on a repeatable benchmark separates a genuine capacity gap from a single distracted session, since in-game map awareness is hard to self-assess accurately in the moment.
Where Working Memory Fits Your MOBA Profile
Working memory is a named core dimension for the Support archetype, whose role depends on tracking multiple threats and ally states without degradation, and it is one of the dimensions competitive across the board for the Flex profile, which has no single catastrophic gap to exploit.
